If I'm allowed to ask at this point, what was going through your head, Sam, when you were choosing tribes? I've heard theories that Sinti and Anasazi were actually five fractured duos, which I assume is true, but what went into the creation of the other tribes? And did you always intend Jen and Lew to be on one tribe?

I wondered the same thing when I met them, but then I figured it would kind of defeat the whole secrecy rule to have 2 people that live together on different tribes. Heh.

first, i knew that I had some players that were new to the series or played three years ago in andes. I decided that I wanted all of them to be on a tribe to give them a fair shot. Plus, the "isolation" tribe (Yupik) would also sort of be a surprise twist... like "who are those people over there playing?" All of them grouped up were: Tilghman, Matt D., Laurel, Lexie, Matt. I then decided since they were new, they'd need some quality, mature, challenge oriented players with them. Looking at the genders, I definitely needed another girl. That girl ended up being Lynne for a variety of reasons, one being that she needed to be as far away from Jamie as possible. I needed a gay guy too. actually let me find my list of them.... eh it isn't that interesting. I ended up deciding on Will for that role, just because he was kinda new too in that he didn't talk to many people after the game. plus he's exciting and he'd liven up the place. i was trying to impress the new people as well so i gave them two popular partiers. =) The third spot was really tough. Stacy was an option, and some other people were too I forget. I ended up deciding on Kevin W. just because I think I really didn't want him on Lisu and that was the only other option. He didn't have a pal for Sinti/Anasazi and he'd be murdered in Ovambo. I was really reluctant with that though... like really. The second I moved his note card over to that tribe I shuddered. I knew that I had given him the most golden opportunity - a tribe of people who didn't know him to mold and use to fight the people that would want him gone. For some reason I think I had both Kevin W and Stacy on that tribe at once, and that it fit for a global picture but I didn't want them both on the same tribe to start off. So that was the first tribe of 8. It was originally 8-8-8-5-5 until a week or two before the game. yeah. i couldn't decide which (jen or lew) to exclude from the game, so i decided I wanted both in. putting them on the same tribe would A) make them a bigger target and one more likely to be voted out and B) keep the secrecy thing. So they were automatically on the biggest tribe. then i also put the people i termed "chat room mini whores" on that tribe too. these people all played mini survivor games with each other every night and all knew each other well. they needed to be isolated together so the secret would be kept and also to prevent them from all aligning come a merge. this is matto, tyler, hector, valerie, and jake. then since that tribe was kinda strong immunity wise they got some weaker players. katie and patrick were going to be on that tribe, but then they got shifted to sinti/anasazi for many reasons. looking through who was left, i found five pairs of two people - two people that had been very close in their original game and never betrayed each other. those were: ethan/tori, katie/patrick, annette/mark, jamie/scott and kevinm/josh. those five pairs really stood out. i tried to prevent intermingling between the pairs... so that like people in the pairs weren't already friends with others. this 5 pairs of 2 stood out so I did that. also these people would find each other quickly, so they wouldn't have to keep the secret for as long. it took me awhile to divide them into what i thought was 2 equal groups of 5. i wanted 2 girls per tribe, but it didn't fit that way. to be honest, that pretty much left lisu. i tried to move more girls onto lisu, or move them all out, but it just worked out best like that. I noticed that most of Lisu did VERY well in the game. ross - 4th minor - 6th ryan - 6th doug - 5th chuck - 2nd ericb - 2nd stacy - 3rd so that kinda worried me that they would kick ass and take control. what i did was wrote each person's name on a name card, spread them out, and then just start grouping. seperating people who should be seperating, and trying out new groups. once i have an example tribes, i don't write it down and shuffle them all up again and try new combinations. after 4 or 5 shuffles some firm patterns emerge and there are groups i want together and larger groups i want together. after that it's pretty much firm. which is totally different from how other hosts do it. I talked to someone else who told me about their game and i was like ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/SirSam972/photos/eek.gif) . They were just thrown together hapharzardly off of impulse suggestions. For mine I like gave everybody overall ratings and even challenge ratings to try and even them out lol and tried out 5 different scenarios. each tribe had a vision that related to how big it was, who was on it, and where they were on the map. yupik - isolationist, newbie tribe lisu - powerful, ragtag, middle of traffic tribe (they were the closest to all tribes) sinti/anasazi - duel 5 pairs split in half ovambo - large, isolationist, chaotic veteran tribe

That's really interesting!
It's great to see you put so much care into sorting out tribes, unlike many hosts out there, especially since that could completely change the outcome of the game.

i love reading behind the scene stuff like this. that was really neat how you did it all. since we started i wondered why each person was put on their respective tribes. and i love your rationality for putting me and Lynne on Yupik LOL. why didnt you just come out and say "the two biggest drunks"! hahaha ![::)](http://img22.exs.cx/img22/3293/heart13.gif)

Heh, I think there was like one week over the summer where I played a mini every night. I never really liked playing them though. Whenever I did play them I would always ally with the same people, and betray the same people (like Katie <3). This was because I knew no one really took minis personal, till one day which I won't get into. Anyways, I never considered myself a "mini whore", but thanks for the label.

::dies laughing:: Oh yeah, in applying I'm like "just put me far far away from her". :X
This was entirely an underrated twist. It had a huge affect on the 10 of us, for sure, though. Poor Scott ::tear::

I knew Sam planned that exactly like that!
Wow! The potential TCs you ten could've had, had Zaza now dominated challenges so much.

um, katie, was i not good enough for you?! lol. DAMN YOU SCOTT FOR NOT SHOWING UP!
no, that twist had a HUGE effect on the game. once sinti and anasazi met, we figured out pretty quickly what would happen if we could have merged into one tribe, so things got pretty insane on whether or not to merge and who exactly to vote off at tribal council.

part of the idea for doing that was to encourage the 2 tribes to merge into 1. I knew the 2 tribes of 5 were smaller than the rest and would find each other in estimated Year 2 - Year 4. I thought splitting pairs would help encourage merging... I didn't think they would meet Lisu or Ovambo on the map anytime soon because they were quite far away. They ended up meeting Lisu early though, and Matt O. was very close to crossing the meteor to meet Mark early in the game but then he chose to move north instead of west.

Sam, if you'd put Stacy on Yupik instead of Kevin W., it would have been a totally different game. For serious.

oh josh, you're more gorgeous than scott, you know it. shhh. ![:-X](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/SirSam972/photos/love.gif) i think my initial impressions of people were: scott - hot josh - hot tori - nice annette - shit! (i heard she was a good player etcetc). you'll see the rest of my thoughts soon enough though imagine lol, interestingly... the first two to meet from anasazi and sinti were the first to go... josh from sinti, ethan from anasazi. secrets secrets are no fun actually thats not really why josh went at all. just a coincidence i s'pose? so long ago!

I think I had to do with Josh leaving over Annette.
I wanted to merge after that and have an allaince of me, Katie, Annette and Mark.
And Ethan not telling everyone on Anasazi was the big reason why I wanted him out so bad haha
